BROTHER MARTIN 3sh '42

Lease from Hershenson/Allen Archive

An Original Vintage Three-Sheet Movie Poster (3sh) (Learn More)

Brother Martin: Servant of Jesus, the 1942 Spencer Williams black African American religious melodrama ("Full length feature"; "The story of a negro who loved God"; "Hear the celebrated 'Nobody Knows the Trouble I've Seen'"; "See and understand the mysteries of Brother Martin's Holy Religion"; "The story of a colored man accepted by God"; the movie has a framing story at the beginning and end about an uncle telling the story of Martin de Porres to his niece; de Porres was a late sixteenth-century Peruvian who was elevated to sainthood in 1962 by Pope John XXIII, he is the the patron saint of mixed-race people, barbers, innkeepers, public health workers, and all those seeking racial harmony) starring Spencer Williams "and a great supporting cast". Note that director/star Spencer Williams made several movies with all-black casts, including this one, in the 1940s, and all had religious themes, and they were shown to all-black audiences. Note that this is a "lost" film which means that no surviving copies are thought to exist. Not only that, but very little is known about the movie itself beyond what is stated on the one-sheet, because no other posters seem to have survived either. If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here.
