An Undated (probably 1950s) Re-release Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked English One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures approximately 27" x 40") (Learn More) The Adventures of Robin Hood, the classic 1938 Michael Curtiz & William Keighley England royalty romantic adventure thriller ("Dazzling to the eye... stirring to the heart - a great entertainment from Warner Bros."; "Based "He lives again - the world's most beloved rogue!"; On Ancient Robin Hood Legends"; "Photographed in Technicolor"; nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award) starring Errol Flynn (in the title role as Robin Hood), Olivia De Havilland (as Maid Marian), Basil Rathbone (as Sir Guy of Gisbourne), Claude Rains (as Prince John), Patric Knowles (as Will Scarlett), Eugene Pallette (as Friar Tuck), Alan Hale Sr. (as Little John), Melville Cooper (as the Sheriff of Nottingham), Ian Hunter (as King Richard the Lion Heart), Una O'Connor, and Herbert Mundin. Note that the mount of Maid Marian is played by none other than Trigger the Horse, before he was purchased by Roy Rogers! Finally, note that anyone who saw this movie remembers well the archery contest which comes down to Errol Flynn in disguise and Owain the Welshman, but few people know that Owain was played by the world's greatest archer, Howard Hill, and that he also did Flynn's bow and arrow stunts shown in the movie! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we have seen this English poster listed as being from 1938, and also as being from the 1950s. We see no identifying information on the poster to lead us to know it is one or the other, but it seems surprising that the image of Flynn does not look tremendously like him, as he was certainly a major star throughout both those periods. If anyone has certain knowledge of when this poster is from, please e-mail us and we will post it here. Please do not bid on this poster unless you can accept the uncertainty as to when it is from. What IS linenbacking? "Linenbacking" is a process that is used to preserve movie posters (the best restorers de-acidify the poster during the restoration process), and to make them far easier to display (it is much easier and less expensive to frame a linenbacked poster). When linenbacking is done correctly, it adds to the value of the poster, and is NOT a defect! Note that the specific poster in this auction either was NOT linenbacked very well, OR the poster had more significant defects (you can tell which type it is by reading our written comments about the poster's condition). In general, know that we received many of the linenbacked posters we are currently selling already linenbacked, but we have examined every poster EXTREMELY carefully, and we did our best to describe what condition the poster was in PRIOR to restoration, the defects the poster had PRIOR to restoration (in the "Pre-Restoration Defects & Quality of Restoration" section), any unrestored defects, and, when it seemed worth noting, something about the quality of the restoration itself. Many other auction houses claim to match what we do in this area, but EVERY person who regularly buys movie posters from major auctions can tell you this is just not the case! We never intentionally overgrade a single item, we never "accidentally" miss defects, and we never enhance a single image! Condition: good. This poster has been linenbacked, but it was not very well done, either because the restorer did not do a very good job, or because the years since it has been linenbacked have not been kind to the poster. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to linenbacking. Generally, it had paper loss at the crossfolds and areas of paper loss in the center of the vertical foldline, with some tears and paper loss on all the horizontal folds. There were pinholes, tears, and several areas of paper loss around the edges of the poster. The poster was not that well backed, because you can see signs of the above general defects and the restoration of the defects (in some cases, as should be immediately evident in our image, the linenbacker did no restoration to some of the defects). I would think few collectors would want to display it as it is, without someone performing some additional restoration. Certainly, a talented restorer could perform additional restoration (either with or without re-backing the poster), but it might be fairly expensive to have this done, so bear that in mind before you place a bid.
