An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded German Movie Poster (measures 33" x 46 1/2" [84 x 118 cm]) (Learn More) Am Vorabend (literally translates to "The Night Before"), the 1944 Gerhard Menzel German romantic melodrama starring Rudolf Forster, Hilde Weissner, Gustav Diessl, Ernst Furbringer, Hilde Korber, Hermann Thimig, Charlotte Thiele, Alice Treff, Curd Jurgens (later billed as "Curt Jurgens"), and Maly Delschaft. We know that this movie was also released as "Ein Blick Zuruck" (with an umlaut over the "u"), and that translates to "A Look Back". Because we have auctioned a first release German poster with the "Am Vorabend" title that is dated 1943, we suspect that the movie was re-titled and re-released under the "Ein Blick Zuruck" title in 1944, and that databases have this version of the movie, and not the 1943 version. We suspect that the 1943 version was directed and written by screenwriter Gerhard Menzel, who also wrote the script for Heimkehr which is remembered as one of the most racist Nazi movies made, for its awful depictions of Polish people, and that the 1944 version of the movie was re-written, because the 1943 poster we have auctioned has his credit taped over! It appears this movie was never released in the U.S. If anyone knows more about any of this, please e-mail us and we will post it here. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: Jaddatz Important Added Info: Note that movie paper from this film is incredibly rare. We have never auctioned even a single movie paper item from this movie until we were consigned this poster (which is a "country of origin" poster for this German movie!). Not only that, but it appears to be from the aborted first release of the movie under a different title (see above). Note also that this is a very rare poster from Germany from during World War II. There are very few German movie posters from during World War II in existence (because of the massive paper shortages in Germany during World War II), and most of those few are in museums. It is likely that German posters from during the Nazi era are even more rare than those from before that era, because most of those that survived the war would have been destroyed right after the war! Condition: very good. The poster was printed in 1943 with the "Am Vorabend" title. It appears that in 1944 the title was changed and a paper snipe with the new title was stapled over the original title, but it could be easily removed. A paper snipe was glued over the directing and screenwriting credit for Gerhard Menzel, and that also can be removed, although not as easily. There is separation at each of the crossfolds. Otherwise the poster has pretty minor fold and border wear and has likely survived in about as good condition as one could hope! Learn More about condition grades
