eMoviePoster.comAuction History Result 7k929 WEST SIDE STORY insert '62 Academy Award winning classic musical, Caroff art, cast image, rare Date Sold 6/2/2016Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded Insert Movie Poster (measures 14" x 36" [36 x 91 cm]) (Learn More) West Side Story, the classic 1961 Robert Wise & Jerome Robbins (winners of the Best Director Academy Award for this film) New York City romantic dance musical ("The screen achieves one of the great entertainments in the history of motion pictures"; "'Best Picture' Winner of 10 Academy Awards 1961"; "Based upon the stage play produced by Robert E. Griffith and Harold S. Prince" winner of the Best Picture Academy Award; with a sentimental script by Ernest Lehman, which borrows heavily from "Romeo & Juliet"; based on a book by Arthur Laurents) starring Natalie Wood, Richard Beymer, Russ Tamblyn, Rita Moreno (winner of the Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for this film), and George Chakiris (winner of the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for this film). The wonderful music was by Leonard Bernstein and the equally wonderful lyrics were by Stephen Sondheim. Note that Natalie Wood's singing was dubbed by Marni Nixon (who had also dubbed The King and I and The Sound of Music), and Richard Beymer's singing was dubbed as well. Recordings exist of some of Natalie Wood's singing, and she absolutely would have been fine, but Hollywood demands perfection! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this poster is from the general 1962 release of this movie (after it won ten Academy Awards). It is not a re-release poster because the movie stayed in continuous release all the way through 1961 and 1962! This insert has the original 1961 NSS, but it has a 1962 copyright in the lower left. There is also a different "post-Awards" insert that has the Joseph Caroff art seen on the one-sheet. We have never seen a "pre-Awards" insert, and we don't know if one was made, but if it was, it likely has a similar image to this poster or the one with the Joseph Caroff art, except without the Academy Award information. If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here. Condition: fair to good. There are some creases, defects, areas of paper loss and tears of varying lengths along parts of some edges. There is an ink pad stamp on the back that slightly bleeds through to the front at right (in the image). There are a few pieces of tape on some edges (not put there for any restoration purpose). There are some creases and scuffs scattered in various areas. Please see our super-sized image to get a good sense of the condition of this item prior to placing a bid.
