An Autographed 3 1/4" x 8 1/2" [8 x 22 cm] Canceled Check (Learn More)

Irving G. Thalberg was a producer, writer and director from the 1920s to the 1930s. In 1920 at 21, he became an executive at Universal Studios, which was then the number one movie studio. He did well there, but he had a failed romance with owner Carl Laemmle's daughter, which likely caused him to leave the studio, and he signed with Louis B. Mayer. When Mayer joined with Metro to form MGM, Thalberg rose in the ranks at the new combined studio and helped turn MGM into the number one studio. He married actress Norma Shearer, and greatly helped her career at MGM. While he made most of the decisions at MGM, he took no screen credit, except on a single movie! Tragically, he died in 1936 of pneumonia, at just 37. AND Noble Johnson was a black African American actor from the 1910s to the 1950s. He was a very important figure in African American film history and some of his movies include: North of the Great Divide, Jungle Book, and Escape from Devil's Island. He passed away in 1978 at the age of 96.

You can learn much more about Noble Johnson by visiting the following link! Against the Grain: Black Film Pioneers: Part II: Noble Johnson
Important Added Info: Note that this canceled check has been personally autographed (signed) by Irving Thalberg on the front, and it was endorsed by actor Noble Johnson on the back (see our images)! Our consignor purchased it from a Todd Mueller auction, but he no longer has the certificate of authenticity, but given that it is a check, we feel it is certain that both signatures are authentic. Note that because the endorsement on the back is on the back of the left of the check, and Thalberg's signature is on the right of the check, one could easily cut the check and display both signatures (and we have seen checks where people just cut out the lower right), so the winner of this auction truly can get "two for the price of one"!
