An Original Vintage Calendar (measures 9 1/2" x 13 1/2" [24 x 34 cm]) (Learn More) Alberto Vargas was a Peruvian artist from the 1920s to the 1980s. In the 1940s, he created a sexy "centerfold" for each issue of Esquire Magazine (they would fold out, and Hugh Hefner borrowed the idea in the 1950s for his Playboy Magazine, except he used photos instead of artwork), and his pin-up art was frequently used as "nose art" for many military aircraft during World War II. Vargas is often considered one of the most famous of the pin-up artists, and his paintings have sold for hundreds of thousands of dollars. He is often reputed to have worked as a poster artist on films such as Ziegfeld Follies, and The Sin of Nora Moran (which is frequently named as one of the greatest posters ever made). He passed away in 1982 at the age of 86. Artist: Alberto Vargas Important Added Info: Note that for this year, Esquire did something a little different with their annual Vargas calendar. It is spiral-bound like the other ones, but it has a cover that reads "Esquire's 1945 Varga Calendar Yearbook" and has very unusual art that we presume is by Vargas. Note: We have 14 images of this calendar, but due to a space limitation, only TEN of the 14 images are displayed above. However, there is a "supersize" link to the right of those images that lets you see the other 4. Condition: good. The back cover has separated from the rest of the calendar and appears to have been trimmed around the edges (apparently it was bigger than the other pages). There are many creases and stains on the cover and a few scattered throughout (see our many images). Learn More about condition grades
