An Original Vintage Comic Book (measures 7" x 10 1/4" [18 x 26 cm]) (Learn More)

Mad, the classic humor magazine ("Humor in a jugular vein") from the 1950s to the present. This comic was published by Bill Gaines (William Gaines) through his company, EC Comics (E.C. Comics), which he inherited from his father in 1947. It was originally a comic book edited by Harvey Kurtzman, and it was one of the famous EC Comics (E.C. Comics) that were banned in the mid-1950s, due to excessive horror content. At that point, publisher Gaines canceled most of his comic book titles, and turned Mad into a magazine with its 24th issue. Unfortunately, he and Kurtzman soon had a falling out, and Al Feldstein, who had been Gaines' writing partner on the Mad comic books (and Feldstein had edited Panic, EC's own imitation of Mad), took over, and the magazine became one of the great success stories of the 1950s and 1960s (led by its trademark character, Alfred E. Neuman, a goofy looking guy whose slogan was "What, me worry?"), with a circulation in the millions at its peak. Gaines never allowed any advertising of any kind in the magazine! In recent years, there was a "Mad" TV show which perfectly captures the spirit of the magazine!
Artist: Harvey Kurtzman
Important Added Info: We recently auctioned all 23 issues of the Mad Comic Book. One of our movie poster consignors remembered that he had two of the comics, and he sent them to us (the other one is issue #7), and they are offered here in two separate auctions! Contents: "E.C. Fan-Addict Club ad. "Frank N. Stein!", script by Harvey Kurtzman, art by Bill Elder; A parody of The Frankenstein horror comics and films. "Lone Stranger Rides Again!", script by Harvey Kurtzman, art by Jack Davis; Lone Ranger and Tonto parody. E.C. comics ad. "Operation Under-the-Ground" (Chapter 2) text story. Six pages of "Hey Look" by Kurtzman. "Bat Boy and Rubin!", script by Harvey Kurtzman, art by Wally Wood; Batman and Robin parody". Please also note also that we don't use a "comic guide" grading system, and OUR grading scale is completely different from standard comic book grading. Our "very good" is completely different from a comic book graded "very good". Because this comic book is rare and valuable, we provide images of ALL the pages of the comic book, which should allow you to get a sense of the condition of this comic book.

Condition: fair to good. There is red marker on the word balloon at middle right on the cover. There is tiny paper loss in the bottom right corner of the cover and some tiny tears and tiniest paper loss at the left of the back cover, but otherwise the comic is in pretty nice condition. We have photographed every page of this comic so bidders can know exactly the condition that it is in.
