Edward Bromberg, Fritz Feld, Hume Cronyn, and "a cast of thousands"! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we have only previously auctioned one example of this Belgian poster, and that poster has been reconsigned to us, so it is still the only example we have ever auctioned! This poster is printed on the back of a map or part of another poster! Why is this? During World War II, there were massive paper shortages in Belgium. Where Belgian movie posters had previously been approximately 23" x 32", there was such a shortage of paper that not only did they often have to print them on the back of other posters or maps, but during World War II, the size of the posters shrank dramatically, with some of them as small as 11" x 15". This situation continued even after World War II, until around 1946 or 1947, when they began making Belgian movie posters in a size of roughly 14" x 22", which became the standard size, and continued for decades! The posters like these that are from during World War II or immediately after, and which are printed in a small size (often on the back of other posters or maps) are INCREDIBLY rare (surely they did not print many, and surely many of them were soon recycled themselves! Condition: good to very good. The poster was printed on the back of a map (see above) and the map very slightly bleeds through to the front in a few light-colored areas and the blank borders only (and this would likely be true of other examples of this poster printed on the back of maps, but we have not seen any other examples of this ultra rare poster to compare them). There are a few pinholes around the edges but otherwise it is in pretty nice condition! The person who purchased this from us and reconsigned it (see above) had it mounted to a very thin Japanese rice paper. This was done solely for preservation purposes, and you can still clearly see the map on the back through the very thin rice paper. It does help protect the poster from deteriorating in any way, but there was no restoration involved. Learn More about condition grades
