An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More) The Wrath of the Gods (also known as "The Destruction of Sakura-Jima or The Wrath of the Gods"), the 1914 Reginald Barker silent Japan romantic religious volcano family relationship melodrama ("A spectacular and dramatic photo drama"; a wild story of a Japanese nobleman who is told that the gods have cursed his family so that if his daughter marries, the nearby volcano will erupt, but a shipwrecked American sailor wants to marry her, and the sailor, played by Frank Borzage, tells her that Jesus is more powerful than Buddha, and that she has nothing to fear, and she does marry him, and immediately after a volcano erupts and destroys their village!) starring Sessue Hayakawa, Tsuru Aoki, Frank Borzage (the famous director; many people don't know he was first an actor, appearing in over 100 movies between 1912 and 1918!), Kisaburo Kurihara, and Henry Kotani NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we have only previously auctioned one example of this poster, 9 years ago (when it sold for $682), and that poster has now been reconsigned to us, so it is still the only movie paper item from this movie we have ever auctioned. We have never seen or heard of ANY other movie paper from this title before! It was first released in 1914 and re-released in 1917, and because there is no studio credited on the poster, we can't say for certain which release it is from. There is a litho number in the bottom right of the image that appears to be "38988", in case that would help someone to date the poster. If anyone knows more about when this poster is from, please e-mail us and we will post it here. What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster had its blank borders trimmed off and had small paper loss at the crossfolds, and tears and tiny areas of paper loss on parts of some foldlines. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was really expertly backed by a talented restorer, who put blank white paper where the original borders had been, and the poster displays great! Learn More about condition grades
