An Original Vintage Comic Book (measures approximately 7 1/8" x 10 1/4") (Learn More)

Panic was a humor comic ("Humor in a varicose vein", which was a parody on Mad's slogan, "Humor in a jugular vein") that was published during the mid-1950s as a companion to EC's Mad (edited by Harvey Kurtzman). This comic was published by Bill Gaines (William Gaines) through his company, EC Comics (E.C. Comics), which he inherited from his father in 1947. Gaines felt that since so many other publishers were creating imitations of Mad magazine, he might as well do one himself! He had Al Feldstein (who was his co-writer and an artist on many of the EC comics) be the editor of Panic. After 23 issues of Mad, it became a magazine with issue #24, edited by Harvey Kurtzman, who had edited all the comic book issues. Sadly, Gaines and Kurtzman soon had a major falling out, and Kurtzman left Mad, and Gaines hired Feldstein to become the new editor of Mad. The issues of Panic are very similar to those of Mad magazine, but they often sell for far less, likely because they don't have the Mad title on them!
Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this comic book! This issue #6 of Panic is difficult to find with its original intentional mostly blank cover, because kids would naturally draw in that area (publisher Gaines left the cover blank as a protest against all the protests against his horror comics, but of course, it was met with deaf ears)!

Contents: "The Phansom" (Phantom parody with art by Bill Elder), "Executive Seat" (art by Wally Wood), "Comic Strip Advertising" (art by Joe Orlando), and "Popular Mechanics Magazine" parody (art by Jack Davis). Text cover. Cover price $0.10.

Please note that we don't use a "comic guide" grading system, and OUR grading scale is completely different from standard comic book grading. Our "very good" is completely different from a comic book graded "very good". Note that this comic book will be sent to the winning bidder in a brand new Mylite2 protective sleeve and a half-back 100% acid-free backing board.

Note that we have pictured both covers and some interior page of this comic, which means that you can hopefully see most defects the comic has, AND get a good sense of its condition. While we gave the comic an overall condition grade (and sometimes describe the defects in words) please rely on the actual images of the comic we provide here to help you decide what YOU think its condition is, and then bid or not bid based on what you are seeing in the images. And if you have ANY doubt as to what the condition of the comic is, or whether you want it in the condition it is is, then please do not bid, as we do not want any retracted bids or returns if at all possible. If in doubt, do not bid!.

Condition: fair to good.
