An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Danish Movie Poster (measures 23" x 36 1/4" [58 x 92 cm]) (Learn More) L'homme Sans Visage (released in English-speaking countries as "The Man Without a Face" and "Eyes Without a Face"), the 1919 Louis Feuillade French silent romantic melodrama (about a woman who is seduced and abandoned, and becomes pregnant and is left to raise her child, and she gets a job as a companion to a rich count in Nice who constantly wears a black velvet mask; when he unmasks, she recognizes him as a World War I war criminal, but later it turns out that he was an impostor and the real count returns!) starring Gina Manes, Rene Creste, Edouard Mathe, Sylvia Lux, and Gaston Michel. Note that Louis Feuillade was one of the most important early French directors! He directed Fantomas in 1913 and Les Vampires in 1915, and it is estimated that he directed over 800 movies! More important, he is credited with being the first to direct "thrillers", and it is clear that Alfred Hitchcock, Fritz Lang, and many other directors were students of Feuillade, and it seems likely that Georges Franju was influenced by this movie in making his 1960 movie "Eyes Without a Face", although in that movie, it was a woman who was masked. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that first release movie paper of any kind from this movie is incredibly rare. We have never auctioned even a single poster or lobby card from this movie until we received this Danish poster in 2019! Not only that, but in all our years of auctioning, we have only auctioned a handful of first release Louis Feuillade movie posters from any country. Now that poster we auctioned in 2019 has been reconsigned to us, so it is still the only example we have ever auctioned! What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster had tiny paper loss at the crossfolds and some tiny bits of paper loss on parts of the folds. It had small paper loss at the ends of the folds in the blank borders, more so in the left end of the middle fold. It had darkening in the right edge of the right blank border. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. There is a diagonal crease in the excess linen in the lower-left corner (but it does not affect the poster). The restorer backed the poster "in the European style", meaning that they did little restoration to the defects described above. Learn More about condition grades
