WILLIAM RANDOLPH HEARST WILLIAM RANDOLPH HEARST letter, signed OR search current auctions Auction History Result 4j0473 WILLIAM RANDOLPH HEARST letter 1934 doesn't want far left Upton Sinclair writing movies! Date Sold 6/6/2023Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. A Letter (measures 8 1/2" x 11" [22 x 28 cm]) (Learn More) William Randolph Hearst was a powerful newspaper publisher from the 1880s to the 1950s. He was also at one time a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, produced movies from the 1910s to the 1930s, and was well-known for his extensive art and exotic animal collection, as well as the portrayal of his life in Citizen Kane. He also had a very long term affair and illegitimate child with Marion Davies (he never divorced his wife, but he lived openly with Davies in California, and also with his family back east)! Hearst passed away in 1951 at the age of 88. Important Added Info: Note that there is a signature on this letter, but it was signed by a secretary to Mr. Hearst, and NOT Mr. Hearst himself. Do not bid on it thinking it is signed by William Randolph Hearst, because it definitely was NOT! It was sent from Hearst (on his personal printed stationery) to Louella Parsons, the famous gossip columnist who worked for him. It has wonderful content, because in it he tells Parsons about his uncensored feelings about Upton Sinclair; Hearst felt that Sinclair should not write screenplays due to his far left politics, "especially in combination with a 'Red' producer like Sam Goldwyn"! He also goes on to say that he will help him become Governor of California (and Sinclair did indeed run for governor with the slogan of "EPIC", which stood for "end poverty in California", but even with Hearst's support, he was defeated). We are also auctioning a different letter written by Hearst to Parsons (and also signed by a secretary), in a separate auction, but also with great content, for an entirely different reason! Condition: good to very good. The letter has darkened somewhat unevenly, but it is still completely readable and enjoyable. Learn More about condition grades
