HYDE 8x10 LC 1920 John Barrymore as evil Mr. Hyde in slums of London, rare! Date Sold 10/15/2020Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical 8" x 10" [20 x 25 cm] Movie Lobby Card (Learn More) Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, the classic 1920 John S. Roberson silent horror thriller ("By Robert Louis Stevenson") starring John Barrymore ("The Screen's Greatest Actor in a Tremendous Story of Man at His Best and Worst"; in the title roles), Martha Mansfield, Brandon Hurst, Charles Lane, and Cecil Clovelly. Note that there were several obscure silent movies based on this classic story starting in 1908. In 1920, Barrymore starred in this version, and there was a different English language version made that same year, and also a German language version, and all three movies had different casts and producers! Also note that Barrymore performed the initial transformation scene into Mr. Hyde without special effects! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that we have never auctioned an 11" x 14" lobby card from this movie, and the only poster we have auctioned was a single window card. We have previously auctioned two 8" x 10" lobby cards, one that showed him as Dr. Jekyll, and that was 3 years ago, and it sold for $410, and the other showed him as Mr. Hyde, and that was 8 years ago, and that was in "good" condition, and it sold for $605. Note that, in the early days of movie making, when lobby cards were first made (around 1915), studios would issue sets of the cards in two sizes; the regular 11" x 14" size, and a smaller 8" x 10" size. The cards were identical in every way except for the different size. This practice continued through the early 1920s, at which point the studios abandoned the smaller lobby cards, likely because theaters either ordered 11" x 14" lobby cards or 8" x 10" stills, and did not order enough of the 8" x 10" lobby cards to justify them continuing to make them. Condition: fair to good. There is paper loss in the blank corners. There is a 4" tear in the bottom border that was repaired with clear tape from the back. There are around a dozen pinholes scattered through the card, including one in Barrymore's neck. There are stains in the left and bottom of the card, with a few in the rest of the card, but not many in the image, and not in Barrymore's face. Obviously, this wonderful card can be restored, but bear in mind its many defects before bidding on it. Learn More about condition grades
