3 Undated (probably 1960s) Re-Release Vintage 8" x 10" [20 x 25 cm] Television Stills (Learn More)

The Mask of Fu Manchu, the 1932 Charles Brabin fantasy search-for-the-tomb-of-Ghengis-Khan Asian adventure horror thriller (based on the story by Sax Rohmer) starring Boris Karloff (in the title role as Dr. Fu Manchu), Lewis Stone, Myrna Loy (as Fah Lo See), Charles Starrett, Jean Hersholt, and Lawrence Grant. Note that, as was common in early Hollywood, non-Asian actors were hired to play Asians, and they did this through the use of "yellowface" makeup (similar to "blackface" makeup that had been used for so long). Note that, as was common in early Hollywood, non-Asian actors were hired to play Asians, and they did this through the use of "yellowface" makeup (similar to "blackface" makeup that had been used for so long). Often, this was in movies that featured "interracial romances" between Asians and westerners, and those who participated in such romances were shunned and often they led to murders or suicides. Thankfully, these sorts of movies and the practice of actors performing in "yellowface" has almost completely been abandoned!

Important Added Info: Note that these stills are undated and measure 8" x 10", and appear to look identical to stills from the first release of this movie. But they are on a "newer" paper stock that is blank on the back ("newer" than the 1930s or 1940s, but consistent with the paper stock used in the 1960s, and the printing is quite nice). We believe that they were created in the 1960s when this movie was shown on TV, and that stills like these were distributed to TV stations. We have been consigned some large collections of stills that came directly from TV stations, and they included a large number of stills that are very similar to these, which makes us think it is even more likely that these were created in the 1960s for TV use. But we can't say for certain, so please do not bid on these stills unless you can accept that uncertainty as to when they were created.

Condition: very good to fine.
