Auction History Result Lot #: JW 102 JOHN WAYNE stock 1sh '40s John Wayne, The Dawn Rider Date Sold 7/10/2004Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. Appears in John Wayne Movie Posters at Auction CATALOG SOLD OUT The image at right appears in the auction catalog we published as shown above and was sold long ago and we do NOT have it available for purchase. An Undated (probably 1940s) Vintage Theatrical Folded One-Sheet Movie Poster (measures 27" x 41") (Learn More) one of four John Wayne stock one-sheets (and an insert) used by theaters to advertise re-released (and in some countries, the first release) John Wayne cowboy western movies that he made for Lone Star Pictures in 1933 and 1934. The first of these one-sheets was made by Lone Star Pictures itself in 1934, and has an artwork image of a cowboy on a horse that does not resemble John Wayne. The second of these was made in 1939 when John Wayne achieved major stardom with Stagecoach, and distributors rushed to re-release his many 1930s B-westerns to theaters, and one poster shows a recognizable John Wayne on a rearing horse with an inset image in the top right corner. There are two other Lone Star stock John Wayne posters that we believe date to the late 1940s (probably 1947), when he had even greater success with his World War II movies, and one has him standing full-length by a tree, and the other has a closer image of him along with Gabby Hayes. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Condition: good to very good. there is an odd printing defect where there is a vertical faint line running from the top of John Wayne's hat down to his cheek by his mouth and then across towards his ear. It clearly is in the printing, and not a flaw in this poster! I know this is a defect in the printing plates, as I have seen other examples of this image, and each has the exact same flaw. It is not all that distracting, and there is no alternative to it, as it is on every example of this image! Also, there is paper loss in the lower right border just slightly extending into the image area (someone put conservation tape on the back of this, but did not attempt to replace the missing paper) paper loss in the bottom blank corners; paper loss at the bottom crossfolds (repaired with tape from the back); small tears and smudges along the middle crossfold; creases and small tears around the edges of the poster Learn More about condition grades
