Date Sold 12/19/2006Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Linenbacked Circus Poster (measures 27" x 41") (Learn More) Sells Floto Circus, the circa 1930 (Tom Mix appeared there in 1929 to 1931) circus poster advertising the starring role of Tom Mix appearing "in person" with Tony "His Wonder Horse". The poster has a great artwork image of Tom Mix riding Tony against a background of desert and mountains! Note that Tom Mix was the top cowboy star of the 1920s, but left the movies to join the Sells Floto Circus in 1929. He spent most of three years there, during which time he was paid $20,000 a week, and had a private railroad car! Note that Tom was 50 years old at the time, and yet he reportedly could still do all of the great cowboy tricks and stunts and sharpshooting that had made him the number one cowboy star in movies for so many years! Unfortunately for Tom, he made the decision to start his own circus after leaving Sells Floto, and that was disastrous, for it was at the height of The Great Depression, and Tom went bankrupt. He returned to Hollywood and made ten movies for Universal, and one serial, "The Miracle Rider", in 1935. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Condition: good to very good. The poster had many horizontal creases and tears in the top half of the image and several in the bottom half of the image. There were a few scattered areas of paper loss, much more so in the left half of the poster. The borders of the poster were quite tattered. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was pretty well backed. The poster required a fair amount of paint touch up throughout (more so in the lettering in the left half of the poster), but there is not a lot of paint on the image area, and that part of the poster definitely does not have a "dipped in paint" heavily restored feel to it (and you can see the defects in the image area when you look close up). I would think most collectors could happily display this great poster as it is, and accept the degree of restoration it has had. Learn More about condition grades
