An Original Vintage 6 1/2" x 8 1/2" International News Wire Service Photo Still (Learn More) Gone with the Wind, the classic 1939 Victor Fleming (winner of the Best Director Academy Award for this film) Civil War era romantic melodrama epic ("The Greatest Motion Picture Ever Made!"; "In the New Screen splendor... The most magnificent picture ever!"; "David O. Selznick's production of Margaret Mitchell's story of the Old South"; "Screen play by Sidney Howard"; winner of the Best Picture Academy Award) starring Clark Gable (nominated for the Best Actor Academy Award for this film; "as Rhett Butler"), Vivien Leigh (winner of the Best Actress Academy Award for this film; "and presenting Vivien Leigh as Scarlett O'Hara"), Leslie Howard ("as Ashley Wilkes"), Olivia de Havilland (nominated for the Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for this film; "as Melanie"), Hattie McDaniel ("as Mammy"), Thomas Mitchell ("as Gerald O'Hara"), Butterfly McQueen (as Prissy), Ann Rutherford ("as Carreen O'Hara"), George Reeves (in his first credited movie role!), Victor Jory, Jane Darwell, Ward Bond, Ona Munson ("as Belle Watling"), Yakima Canutt, Harry Davenport ("as Dr. Meade"), Carroll Nye ("as Frank Kennedy"), Laura Hope Crews ("as Aunt Pittypat"), Alicia Rhett ("as India Wilkes"), Barbara O'Neil ("as Ellen O'Hara"), and Marcella Martin (as Cathleen Calvert) NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that this is probably the absolute coolest wire service still I have ever seen! The snipe is titled "SCARLET -- FOUND AT LAST", and tells how "movieland's two-year-long much-ballyhoo-ed search for Scarlet O'Hara is ended at last. No southern belle with a honeychile accent, but this British beauty will play the heroine in the film version of Margret Mitchell's 'Gone With the Wind'. This British beauty being Vivien Leigh, dark-haired, green-eyed English girl. Producer David O. Selznick announced her selection today, January 13th. Selznick explained that since many fine southern families took great pride in their English ancestry, it was not in the least incongruous for Vivien to don a southern accent and hate Yankees"! Surely, this wonderful still belongs an a major "Gone With the Wind" collection, and I hope it will be displayed so that many can enjoy it! Also note that a paper snipe was glued to the back of the still, and then folded over to the front. Normally, this was done rather than gluing the snipe to the back, so that the snipe could be unfolded and the still could be displayed with the snipe unfolded, which would let moviegoers read the information on the snipe in the lobby. However, this snipe was glued on so that the written portion is only readable when the snipe is folded over the bottom of the still, which slightly defeats this purpose (although one can see the top of the still and the snipe at the same time, which could not be done if the snipe was glued on the back). This was done with many stills of the 1930s, but often, the snipes are either partially or completely lost, because it is easier for them to be torn off. UNLESS OTHERWISE NOTED, THE SNIPE DOES NOT HAVE ANY EFFECT ON THE FRONT OF THE STILL! Also note that this wire service still measures 6 1/2" x 8 1/2", but has not been trimmed. Note that there is a stamp on the back of the still (from the wire service that distributed it). Condition: very good to fine. The snipe is darkened and very fragile along the folded over area. The still has some faint emulsion scuffs, but they are only noticeable when the still is tilted to the light. Learn More about condition grades
