The company initially had a fleet of 58 steamships and expanded its operations rapidly, first to other Asian ports and then worldwide, with a line service to London being inaugurated in 1899. In World War II (WWII), the NYK Line provided military transport and hospital ships for the Imperial Japanese Army and Navy, and only 37 NYK ships survived the war. In modern times, it has a fleet of about 800 ships, which includes container ships, tankers, roll-on/roll-off car carriers, cruise ships, and more. Artist: Koiso Ryohei Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this Japanese poster! Note that this poster mentions three cruise ships which served on the San Francisco run until the Japanese government declared a ban on all voyages to the United States in August of 1941. They were later converted into auxiliary aircraft carriers. The Nitta Maru was renamed Chuyo and was sunk after being torpedoed by the USS Sailfish in 1944. The Yawata Maru was renamed Un'yo and sunk in a storm after being torpedoed by the USS Barb in 1944. The Kasuga Maru was renamed Taiyo and sunk after being torpedoed by the USS Rasher in 1944. It had tears and small paper loss around the edges, more so in the bottom corners, but fortunately, mostly in the blank areas. It had some creases, smudges, and scuffs scattered throughout the image. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was pretty well backed, but you can see signs of the above defects and the restoration of the above defects, especially in the border areas described above.
