A 1951 Realart Re-release Vintage Theatrical Folded One-Sheet Movie Poster (measures 27" x 41") (Learn More) Frankenstein, the classic 1931 James Whale Universal monster horror thriller ("The monster that terrorized the world!"; "The Man Who Made a Monster"; "Warning! The monster is loose!"; "Based upon the Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley Story"; "Adapted by John L. Balderston from the play by Peggy Webling"; the first of the Universal "Frankenstein" movies, and regarded as one of the finer movies of any genre, in large part due to the marvelous acting of Boris Karloff, and the marvelous direction of James Whale!) starring Colin Clive (as Dr. Herbert V. Frankenstein), Boris Karloff (as the Frankenstein monster), Edward Van Sloan, Fredric Kerr, Mae Clarke, Dwight Frye (extremely memorable as Fritz), and John Boles NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Condition: good to very good. There are two 12" diagonal creases in the left center of the poster. One runs from the left border 1" below the "D" of "DESTROY" and runs through the worlds "DESTROY YOU?" and ends in the left edge of the monster's coat. The other starts in the left border 1" above the "H" of "HE" and runs through the word "HE" and into the left edge of the monster's coat, meeting the other crease. The lower crease is much stronger than the upper one and there is a fine scratch line along the words "DESTROY YOU" (the other crease is faint and difficult to see). There is a V-shaped cut (3/4" x 3/4") 1/2" to the left of the part of the monster's coat where the two creases described above meet. There are two other diagonal creases. Both start from the middle crossfold. One goes upward to the left through the monster's coat and ends in the white background just next to it. The other goes downward to the lower left through the monster's coat and ends in the white background at the point where the coat meets the pants. There is a series of horizontal creases in this area where the paper got "scrunched" (it is mostly in the white background but extends 1" into the monster's pant leg). There is small paper loss at the top crossfold and many tiny creases between the top and middle crossfold. There is 1/2" of vertical separation at the middle crossfold. There are many small tears in the left and right 7" of the top foldline. There is tiny separation at the ends of several foldlines (in the blank borders) and there is a pinhole in each corner. There are some tiny tears in the right 7" of the middle foldline. There are light, faint diagonal creases in the right 1/3 of the poster, but you can barely see them from the front. There are smudges in the right of the bottom blank border and some faint creases and smudges throughout the poster. THE POSTER HAS NEVER HAD ANY RESTORATION OF ANY KIND, AND THERE IS NO TAPE ANYWHERE ON THE FRONT OR BACK OF THE POSTER! The only thing on the back of the poster is the original NSS stamp, and someone wrote the NSS number (51-683) in 2" high numbers across the NSS stamp (which is to the left of the top quarter of the vertical foldline), and they also wrote the NSS number on the reverse side of the poster (to the right of the top quarter of the vertical foldline). Both those numbers are written in the typical black grease pencil used at the time to write NSS numbers, and neither of those numbers or the NSS stamp show through to the front at all. There is nothing else whatsoever written or stamped on the back of the poster. While the poster DOES have clear condition defects, they are certainly the sort that are easily repaired during the standard linenbacking process. If this poster is linenbacked by a talented professional, it will look fantastic after linenbacking, and there will truly be little paint restoration anywhere on the poster (it would likely then be described as "fine on linen" at any major auction house!). But, on the other hand, I could certainly understand someone who would want to keep this poster completely unrestored, for it is likely there are few other examples that are both not linenbacked, and also not restored in any way!
