An Original Vintage Theatrical German Movie Pressbook (pb; measures 8 1/4" x 11 3/4" [21 x 30 cm]; 39 pages) (Learn More) Die Reise nach Tilsit (released in the U.S. as "Trip to Tilsit" and in other English-speaking countries as "The Excursion to Tilsit"), the 1939 Veit Harlan German romantic love triangle melodrama (about a farmer and his wife, and how he meets a "bad" woman, who tries to convince him to kill his wife and run off with her, but he doesn't do it, although he comes close, and he takes his wife on a trip to the big city, and begs her to forgive him) starring Frits van Dongen, Kristina Soderbaum (the wife of director Veit Harlan, and she starred in most of his movies after they were married), Anna Dammann, Wolfgang Kieling, and Joachim Plaff. Note that if this movie sounds very familiar, it is because it is a remake of the Murnau classic "Sunrise", which had been made just 12 years earlier. But that was a Hollywood movie, and apparently the Nazis thought they should have a German version, and this one is titled after the source novel, and it does not have the expressionist scenes that the earlier Murnau movie did, but it is still apparently an excellent movie! Note that this movie is not on the list of "forbidden" movies, even though it was directed by the infamous Veit Harlan, director of "Jud Suss" (and most of his other movies are on that list). Note that director Veit Harlan was one of the most infamous of the Nazi film directors, directing Jud Suss and many other virulent anti-Jewish Nazi movies during World War II. After the war, almost ALL of his movies were banned, not just the anti-Jewish ones, and he was put on trial for war crimes. But in 1950, after several trials, he was set free, and in 1951, he resumed making movies, making a dozen of them until his passing in 1964. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this German pressbook, which is a "country of origin" item for this German movie! Not only that, but we have only previously auctioned four German programs, and NO other paper of any kind (and it is quite likely the movie was never released anywhere else than Germany, and that virtually all German paper other than programs was destroyed, so this might be one of the only opportunities to ever see what advertising was prepared for this movie! Also note that this German pressbook is complete and uncut! Given that theater owners received pressbooks partly in order to create their newspaper advertising, and quite frequently cut them up for that purpose, it is rare to find a pressbook that IS complete and uncut! Condition: very good, NO CUTS. The pressbook is complete and uncut. Learn More about condition grades
