A record 197 nations competed in the Games, comprising 10,318 athletes and it was the first Games to be staged in a different year from the Winter Games. However, it will probably always be most remembered for the bombing that took place in Centennial Olympic Park that killed two, injured 111, and caused one death by heart attack.
