Date Sold 9/9/2012Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Paperbacked Magazine Cover (measures 8 3/4" x 11") (Learn More) Life, the magazine first published in 1883 (not to be confused with the Life Magazine of 1936 on). It was conceived as a Puck-like magazine, and was very popular until 1925, when The New Yorker was published, and many of the top writers and artists from Life moved to the new magazine. Many famous artists and writers got their start in this first Life Magazine, including Norman Rockwell and Robert Ripley, among many others. In 1936, the publisher of Time purchased the name only from the former publisher, and then ended the magazine, and began publishing the new Life that same year, and it ceased regular publication in 1976, although it continued with special issues for many years (there is no relationship between the two magazines other than the title). Artist: Coles Phillips Important Added Info: Note that this paperbacked magazine cover is from a collection that was consigned to us by a man who collected the covers of these magazines only (of course choosing the ones with the absolute best art!), and he had all of them professionally paperbacked, which not only presents them far better, but which makes them extremely easy to frame and enjoy (not only are these works of art by famous artists of the early to middle 20th century, but they also are very nostalgic, showing America when it was growing from a minor country to the leading world power, and any of them look great framed on a wall!). What IS paperbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The cover had been folded down the middle and there is a faint library stamp in the top right. The restorer backed the magazine cover "in the European style", meaning that they did not do restoration to the defects described above, but they are really not very distracting (and any restorer could touch them up without re-backing the cover).
