A Complete Set of 4 Original Vintage Folded World War II Posters (each measures 40" x 55 3/4" [102 x 142 cm]) (Learn More) The Four Freedoms is a series of four oil paintings ("Save Freedom of Speech", "Save Freedom of Worship", "Freedom from Want", and "Freedom from Fear") made in 1943 by artist Norman Rockwell. The four freedoms refer to President Franklin D. Roosevelt's 1941 State of the Union address, in which he identified essential human rights that should be universally protected. The paintings were reproduced in The Saturday Evening Post, were used for World War II (WWII) war bond posters, and were the highlight of a touring exhibition sponsored by The Post and the U.S. Department of the Treasury. They were issued in several different sizes in 1943, and they are sometimes sold as sets of four, but much more often sold as individual posters. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: Norman Rockwell Important Added Info: Note that this is a complete set of all four of these classic Norman Rockwell posters, referred to as "The Four Freedoms". Since a high percentage of the sets of these were "broken up" and sold individually, it is very difficult to find a complete set (to collect a complete set one by one can take quite a long time!). But there is something even more special about this set. As noted above, they were created in three sizes, and the smallest size (the 20" x 28" ones) are the ones most often seen, and the middle size (the 28" x 40" ones) are far more rare and desirable than the smaller size. But even more rare than the middle size is this largest size (40" x 56"). In the past, we have only auctioned three of these largest sized posters, and all three of those were the "Freedom of Speech" one, and we have auctioned NONE of the other three posters in the 40x56 size. Given that the current state of the world has caused many of these "freedoms" to be challenged in today's United States, these posters are just as relevant now as they were when they were created 74 years ago! I certainly hope that the purchaser of this great historic set displays them! Condition: very good. The "Freedom From Fear" poster is in "good to very good" condition. It has 15" of clean separation in the right end of the top horizontal fold and some separations at the crossfolds, with some tiny surface paper loss on parts of the folds, and some tiny paper loss in small parts of the borders, and some darkening in one small part of the blank border. The "Freedom From Want" poster is in "good to very good" condition. It has a small water stain in the background to the right of the woman's head, separation on small parts of some crossfolds, and minor fold and border wear. The "Freedom of Worship" poster is in "very good to fine" condition, with minor fold and border wear. The "Freedom of Speech" poster is in "very good" condition. It has some creases along the folds (likely caused when the poster was machine folded). It has minor fold and border wear, and some darkening in one small part of the blank border. Overall, I would say the posters have survived in about as good condition as one could hope, given their age and large size. Given their size, it is likely that they will be backed, and their defects are the sort that are easily corrected during the linenbacking process. They will look incredible displayed on the new owner's wall (which we hope will be a public place, so that everybody can see them and appreciate them!). Learn More about condition grades
