An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded Three-Sheet Stage Show Poster (measures 40 1/2" x 79 3/4") (Learn More) Joe Walsh's Brown Derby Minstrels, the circa 1920s poster advertising a touring black African American group of minstrel musicians, who put on a minstrel show that likely included music and other forms of prepared skits and scenes, appearing in Ohio ("Columbia Theatre Alliance 4 Days Com. Sunday Mat. Sept. 2 Street parade at noon - Mon. & Tues. Palace Theatre Ashland, O."). Note that a perpetual calendar shows that "Sunday, September 2" fell in 1900, 1906, 1917, 1923, 1928, and 1934. Based on the style and quality of the printing of the three different posters we have discovered from this show, we think it is likely that it is from the 1910s or 1920s, meaning they would date from between 1917 and 1928, but we have been unable to find ANY additional information about this performing group. If anyone knows more about this poster or "Joe Walsh's Brown Derby Minstrels", please email us and we will post it here. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this three-sheet depicts a great image of two minstrels performing some sort of gambling skit, where one has a pair of dice and a fistful of money, and is apparently trying to convince the other man to shoot craps with him, and both of the minstrels are wearing extremely gaudy outfits! Also note that this three-sheet was printed in 2 sections, and that there is an additional printed snipe ("PALACE THEATRE ASHLAND, O."), which was likely displayed across the bottom of the poster when the minstrels played at that specific theater. Without the snipe, the poster measures 40 1/2" x 79 3/4", and with the snipe, it measures 40 1/2" x 88 3/4". The three pieces of the poster have not been attached in any way. Condition: very good. There are pinholes, smudges, and stains around the edges of the poster and small paper loss in the upper right border. There are a few smudges and faint stains scattered through the image, and some separation on just a few of the crossfolds, with some extremely tiny paper loss. Overall, the poster has survived in extremely good condition considering its age, and after a simple linenbacking by a talented professional, the poster will look incredible!
