eMoviePoster.comAuction History Result 6s079 CASTLE IN THE DESERT linen 1sh 1942 Sidney Toler as Charlie Chan with gun, ultra rare! Date Sold 6/9/2019Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More) Castle in the Desert, the 1942 Harry Lachman Asian detective mystery crime thriller ("Based on the character 'Charlie Chan' created by Earl Derr Biggers") starring Sidney Toler (as Charlie Chan), Arleen Whelan, Richard Derr, Douglass Dumbrille (billed as "Douglas Dumbrille"), Henry Daniell, Edmund MacDonald, Victor Sen Yung (billed as "Sen Yung"), Steven Geray, and Lucien Littlefield. Note that this was the last Charlie Chan film released by 20th Century Fox who then turned over the series to Monogram. Note that the very first Charlie Chan movie was "House Without a Key" in 1925, with George Kuwa as Chan. In 1927, "The Chinese Parrot" (directed by Paul Leni) starred Sojin Kamiyama as Chan. In 1929 came the third movie, "Behind That Curtain", starring E.L. Park as Charlie Chan. 1931 brought "Charlie Chan Carries On", starring Warner Oland in the first of many movies with him as the Asian detective, and he was later replaced by Sidney Toler and then Roland Winters (there would ultimately be 47 Charlie Chan movies!). Of course, Charlie Chan is one of the most memorable literary creations ever, from author Earl Derr Biggers, but because politically correct-minded people have viewed the character as outdated, the movies are rarely shown, which is a shame! Important Added Info: Note that first release 1942 movie paper from this movie is incredibly rare. We have only previously auctioned one-sheet once before, and that was 18 years ago, when it sold for $511! What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster had small paper loss at the crossfolds. It had a piece of tape on the back of the top 4" of the vertical fold, with some small tears and tiny paper loss in parts of the vertical fold, and a lesser amount of wear on the horizontal folds. It had just a few pinholes and tape stains in the blank borders. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was nicely backed, and displays well!
