An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Three-Sheet Movie Poster (3sh; measures 41" x 81" [104 x 206 cm]) (Learn More) The Big Chance, the 1933 Albert Herman romantic boxing sports gambling crime action adventure melodrama (this movie combines every boxing movie cliche, and many of them were likely first used in this movie!; there is a young boxer who is the contender for the championship, and he makes a deal with the champ to take a dive in their championship match, but while he is training, he meets a 10 year old boy who idolizes him, and he meets the boy's older sister, and they fall in love, and he starts to have second thoughts about throwing the fight, so the champ sends his sexy girlfriend to seduce the contender, and when that doesn't work, and the boy overhears what they are planning, the champ's men kidnap the boy, but their plans backfire when the contender rescues the boy and he confesses to his girlfriend, and she tells him he has to win the fight to prove his honesty, and he says he is not good enough, and he is taking a terrible beating in the match, but ultimately, he knocks out the champ and proposes to his girlfriend, who is listening over the radio) starring John Darrow, Merna Kennedy, Mickey Rooney, Natalie Moorhead, and J. Carrol Naish. Also note that this is one of 50 "Mickey McGuire" shorts that Mickey Rooney starred in between 1927 and 1933 (he started when he was only six years old!). After 1933, he had a brief "lull" in his career, but he soon resurfaced as a top teen actor, and it was not long before he moved to the top of the box office in his roles in MGM movies, both in the Andy Hardy series, and in musicals with Judy Garland. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: Hap Hadley Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this three-sheet, which has completely different art from the one-sheet (we have auctioned two one-sheets, but no other first release movie paper at all)! Also note that "Hap" Hadley, who drew this poster, was an important illustrator of the 1920s and 1930s, and one of the very few who was allowed to sign his movie poster work, and this poster has great stone litho Hap Hadley art of John Darrow in boxing trunks being declared the victor, and Merna Kennedy! What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: fair. The poster had some tiny bits of paper loss on small parts of some folds, but was otherwise in really nice condition. It was in "very good to fine" condition prior to linenbacking. Unfortunately, the poster received significant water staining down the right 3-5" (unevenly), and it has discolored and rippled both the linen and the border of the poster, with some within the border of the image. I don't think the new owner would want to display the poster with this major defect, but certainly a talented restorer can remove it from the old linen, and since the defects are primarily in the blank border, and only slightly in the background, the poster will look fantastic after it is re-backed. But certainly, bear in mind this significant defect before bidding on this poster. Learn More about condition grades
