An Undated (probably 1939) Re-release Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked One-Sheet Movie Poster (measures 27" x 41") (Learn More) The Man from Utah, the 1934 Robert N. Bradbury cowboy western ("Action on the Range and in the Rodeo") starring John Wayne, George 'Gabby' Hayes, Polly Ann Young (sister of Loretta Young, to whom she bore a striking resemblance!), Anita Campillo (billed as "Anita Compillo"), Edward Peil Sr., and Yakima Canutt NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that all one-sheets from John Wayne movies that were printed in the 1930s can be extremely difficult to date (unless, of course, the poster is actually dated). This is because John Wayne was so popular in the 1930s, that his movies were often re-released, and sometimes the re-release posters contain all new artwork, sometimes the equal of the first release posters. The greatest number of 1930s re-releases occurred in late 1939 after Wayne's great success in "Stagecoach" and "Allegheny Uprising". Warner Brothers re-released his early Vitagraph movies at that time, and Monogram re-released his early Lone Star movies at that time. The Warner Brothers posters say "Star of Stagecoach and Allegheny Uprising", but the Monogram posters are more difficult to date. It is generally believed that the Monogram posters that credit Gabby Hayes on the poster date from around 1939, as he became a well-known star at this time as well. IN ANY EVENT, THESE LATE 1930s RE-RELEASE POSTERS ARE JUST AS RARE AS THE ORIGINALS! In some cases, no one has ever seen even a single example of the "first release" poster. 1930s John Wayne posters are so rare, that one must be willing to accept a re-release, especially if it has striking art! Condition: very good. This poster was linenbacked, and the restorer did a good job, but you can see signs of the restoration from inches away (since most people look at posters framed on a wall from at least a few feet away, we don't feel this is a defect, but we feel it should be noted). See below for this poster's pre-restoration condition (we are the only major auction company we know of that shares this information with our bidders, but we wish everyone did!). good to very good. The borders of the poster were slightly tattered, and new paper has been very carefully placed over the old paper (it was very well done, and I don't know if many people would realize it unless it was specifically shown to them). There was an extra fold 1/4" below the regular top foldline. There were creases along the foldlines and small paper loss at the crossfolds. There were small areas of paper loss across the right 10" of the middle foldline, and a small area of paper loss in the left of the middle foldline. The person who restored the poster did a nice job. You can see signs of the restoration from close up, but from any distance away the poster looks quite nice! Note that there is a tiny dot of surface paper loss right near the top crossfold. It would be a simple matter for any restorer to touch up that tiny area without needing to do any other restoration. Learn More about condition grades
