(Learn More) Cabiria, the 1914 Giovanni Pastrone Italian silent Sicily/Spain historical adventure family relationship epic (based on the book by Titus Livus; screenplay by Gabriele D'Annunzio, who received huge billing before the title!) starring Emilio Vardannes, Marcellina Bianco (in the title role as young Cabiria, later Elissa the slave), Teresina Maragoni, Umberto Moszato, Ernesto Pagani (as Maciste, the slave), Didaco Chellini and Edouard Davesnes (as Hannibal and Hasdrubal), Dante Testa (as Karthalo, High Priest of Moloch), Lidia Quaranta (billed as "Lydia Quaranta"; as the adult Slave Elissa, formerly Cabiria), and Ernesto Gemelli (as Archimedes). Note that this movie was one of the very first feature films (predating "The Birth of a Nation" by a year), and it was a true epic, beginning with a volcano (Mount Etna) exploding in Sicily, and then covering many years, and bringing in real life historical characters like Hannibal, and it even included Maciste, who would later star in numerous Italian movies throughout the years! The movie was released in the U.S. just two months after its Italian premiere, and its great success surely influenced American filmmakers (especially D.W. Griffith) to create major feature films of their own. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: E.H. Pfeiffer Important Added Info: Note that we have pictured the front cover and four interior 2-page spreads from this program.
