An Unfolded German Advertising Poster (measures 47 1/4" x 66" [120 x 168 cm]) (Learn More) Regie-Gold, the 1932 German advertising poster (with a tagline that translates to "Your choice") promoting the purchase of Regie-Gold cigarettes, and featuring Ludwig Hohlwein art of a smiling man enjoying a smoke. The Austrian Imperial and Royal Tobacco Directorate was founded in 1784 and cultivation, production and trade were reserved for the state. This right was later relaxed in return for corresponding taxes, which particularly affected trade. After the World War I (WWI), a large part of the tobacco growing areas and factories were lost. Ludwig Hohlwein was a German artist from the 1890s until his passing in 1949. He is one of the best known German poster artists (though his reputation suffered because of his work with the Nazis)! Initially an architect student who illustrated for newspapers, he went on to design book decorations, booklets, and advertising posters. He joined the Nazi Regime in 1933 after refusing an offer to emigrate to the United States, and created government program posters as well as advertisements for the 1936 Munich Olympics. Poster historian Alain Weill says "Hohlwein was the most prolific and brilliant German posterist of the 20th century. Beginning with his first efforts, Hohlwein found his style with disconcerting facility. It would vary little for the next forty years. The drawing was perfect from the start, nothing seemed alien to him, and in any case, nothing posed a problem for him. His figures are full of touches of color and a play of light and shade that brings them out of their background and gives them substance". NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: Ludwig Hohlwein Important Added Info: Note that this advertising poster was printed in 2 sections designed to overlap. Condition: good to very good. Both sections were never folded. It has a strip of plastic with holes attached to the back of the top border of the top section and the right border of the bottom section (no doubt this was done as a way of hanging this poster with others on racks, and being able to easily access any of them). The plastic strips could be removed by a professional or talented amateur, or of course, the excess plastic could simply be trimmed off. The top section has a tape stain in the right of the bottom border, slightly extending into the edge of the image. It also has a small tear in the bottom blank border. Otherwise, both sections are in nice condition! Learn More about condition grades
