Lease from Hershenson/Allen ArchiveA Travel Poster (Learn More) The Compagnie Generale Transatlantique (typically known overseas as the French Line or Transat) was a French shipping company which was founded in 1855 by the brothers Emile and Issac Pereire under the name Compagnie Generale Maritime. The company was entrusted by the French government to transport mail to North America, and in 1861, the name of the company was changed to Compagnie Generale Transatlantique. After a period of trials and errors in the late 19th century, the company gained fame in the 1910s and 1930s with its prestigious ocean liners such as SS Paris, SS Ile de France, and especially SS Normandie. Contrary to what its name suggests, the company was not content with operating just in the North Atlantic route. It also offered service to Central America and even, for a time, the Pacific coast. From the beginning of the 20th century, it offered crossings between Marseille and Algiers, creating a tourist circuit in North Africa in the 1920s. In the 1930s, the company briefly became involved in aviation through Air France Translatlantique. Other than operating ocean liners, the company also had a significant fleet of freighters. Artist: A.M. Cassandre Important Added Info: Note that the SS Normandie was a French ocean liner which entered service in 1935 as the largest and fastest passenger ship afloat. It was able to cross the Atlantic in a record 4.14 days, and remains the most powerful steam turbo-electric-propelled passenger ship ever built. Normandie's novel design and lavish interiors led many to consider her the greatest of ocean liners. During the World War II (WWII), Normandie was seized by U.S. authorities at New York and renamed USS Lafayette. In 1942, the liner caught fire while being converted to a troopship, capsized onto her port side and came to rest on the mud of the Hudson River at Pier 88. Although salvaged at great expense, restoration was deemed too costly and she was scrapped in October 1946.
