An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded Spook Show Poster (1/2sh; measures 22" x 28" [56 x 71 cm]) (Learn More)

Twist Contest, this circa 1960s "spook show" poster advertising a twist contest, as well as a triple-bill showing of horror movies ("On Stage"; "Giant tripple [sic] terror show..."; "Special extra added attraction Twist Contest"; "Winner will receive a REAL DEAD BODY!") featuring art a couple doing the twist with dayglo accents! This was a poster for a "spook show" of the 1960s ("spook shows" started in the 1930s, and continued into the late 1960s, with their greatest prominence in the late 1940s and 1950s). Local theaters would book three to five low budget movies, and then advertise them as a late night "spook show". Often they would have "live" acts on stage (sometimes famous actors who had appeared in monster movies would appear on stage in full make up, and sometimes it would be local actors dressed as monsters), and often the posters would make outrageous promises (sometimes they might say a person would be beheaded on stage, etc!). Not too many of these spook show posters survive (almost all the known surviving ones are window cards, some of which are 14" x 22", and some of which are 22" x 28", and the shows certainly had very limited runs). The few "spook show" window cards that DO survive are rarely in even "very good" condition. If anyone knows more about this specific spook show or this poster, please e-mail us and we will post it here.
If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know.
Important Added Info: What a wonderful and bizarre poster this is! Obviously it was displayed during a spook show, but because the dance The Twist was incredibly popular at the time of this show (likely 1963), the promoters of this spook show added a "twist", where they had a contest, and they promised to give the winner "a real dead body". Also note that they advertised this as a "tripple terror show", and we can't tell if they were accidentally spelling triple wrong or if they were making a weird joke! Note finally that this is an extremely rare poster. We have only auctioned one in all our years of auctioning and that was in 2003! Note also that this poster was folded at one time but has been laying flat for a long time and will be sent rolled in a tube.

Condition: good to very good. The poster has moderate wear and scuffing along the folds and some separation in the ends of the center horizontal fold. The poster was folded too quickly after printing resulting in minor ink transfer from the top to the bottom and left to right (mostly only visible in the blank white areas) and it has slightly darkened along the upper right blank border. The rare poster is otherwise in generally nice condition (see our image).
