Savage stage success by Franz Lehar, Victor Leon and Walter Stein"; about a pretty showgirl who travels to a mythical European country, and both the Crown Prince and another nobleman fall in love with her, but the king won't let either of them marry her, so she marries the richest man in the country; he dies on their wedding night in the throes of passion, and she goes back to Paris, after inheriting a fortune, and she throws lavish parties and is known as "The Merry Widow"; many more events happen before she is ultimately united with her true love) starring Mae Murray (in the title role "as the Widow"), John Gilbert ("as the Prince"), Roy D'Arcy, George Fawcett, Tully Marshall, Sally O'Hara, Josephine Crowell, and Clark Gable (as one of the ballroom dancers; in one of his 14 uncredited roles prior to making his real debut in 1931's "The Painted Desert"). Important Added Info: Note that this is a deluxe still printed on double weight paper stock. Note that this is one of 80 deluxe oversized stills (measuring 11" x 14" or similar) which were consigned to us, and they all originated from the legendary James Card Collection! We auctioned 100 other stills from this collection in our September Major Auction, and those mostly auctioned for between $30 and $250 each, with a few selling for more, with the highest selling for $535! Now we have 80 more from that collection in this set of auctions. James Card was a film preservationist who, starting in 1948, worked at the newly created George Eastman House in Rochester, New York, and he helped build their massive motion picture collection, preserving movies that had been forgotten at that time. In 1955, he discovered that Louise Brooks was living as a recluse in New York City, and he persuaded her to move to Rochester, where she wrote many letters and some books about her legendary career. Not only do these 100 oversized stills (which we are auctioning individually) have wonderful "provenance", but there is also no fear that they are not from their first release (and many of the stills have photographer stamps on the back or embossed, and some have other information on the back, and several have a stamp that identifies them as being from the "James Card Collection"! Condition: good to very good. There are tears and areas of paper loss around the edges, but they mostly only affect the blank borders. The still has slightly darkened throughout.
