Wells' Things to Come, the classic 1936 William Cameron Menzies English futuristic science fiction (sci-fi) utopian thriller ("What will the next hundred years bring to mankind?"; "A mighty challenge to the world of today!"; "Like a flaming comet come this startling, human picturization of the world of the future!"; "Will the new bomb destroy mankind?"; "Will future generations be driven to build cities underground?"; "Will World Ward III destroy civilization?"; "The Picture that tells all"; "An Alexander Korda Production";"See the world in ruin! See its amazing renovation! See the city of glass! See humans living underground! See the gigantic space gun for the first flight to the moon! See man's substitute for the sun! See civilization as we know it today laughed at by our great-grandchildren! See the 'wandering sickness' destroy half the people on the earth!"; produced by Alexander Korda; based on the novel The Shape of Things to Come by H.G. Wells, set 100 years into the future, in 2036; about a second world war [not WWII!] which causes great turmoil in the world, and then scientists begin to rebuild civilization into a scientifically designed utopia) starring Raymond Massey, Ralph Richardson, Sir Cedric Hardwicke, Pearl Argyle, Patricia Hilliard, Margaretta Scott, Edward Chapman, "and a cast of 20,000" NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that we have only once before auctioned this pressbook, and that was 5 years, when it auctioned for $1,305, and that one had a large paper snipe glued to the front cover! Not only is this complete and uncut, but it also has the 24-page ad section, the full-color tipped-in herald (see below), and a 1-page and a 2-page supplement. Also note that when studios would prepare pressbooks they would often include a sample of the herald. Most often, the herald is no longer still with the pressbook. Sometimes, the herald by itself will sell for almost as much as the rest of the entire pressbook! This pressbook contains the original herald which was "tipped-in" to an interior page, so we have pictured that interior page that shows this incredible full-color herald. Also note that pressbooks were prepared prior to a movie being released. Often, changes would be made in a movie advertising campaign (billing of actors, different images, etc.), and the theaters would print up special supplements that they would send out with the pressbooks that had already been printed. These supplements are very rare, far more rare than the pressbooks themselves! Some pressbooks would have no supplements, some would have one, and some would have several. Almost every Academy Award winning movie would have a special "Academy Award winner" supplement. Also note that we have provided an image of the front and back covers of this pressbook, and of course, the winner of this auction will receive the entire single pressbook we are auctioning (plus any supplements or heralds described above)! Also note that this pressbook is complete and uncut! Given that theater owners received pressbooks partly in order to create their newspaper advertising, and quite frequently cut them up for that purpose, it is rare to find a pressbook that IS complete and uncut! Condition: fair to good, WITH CUTS. The pressbook is in pretty nice condition EXCEPT it is missing the center 4 pages. It is otherwise complete, and it includes three supplements (one with 24 pages), and it also has the tipped-in full-color herald. There is much scuffing in the black background at the top and bottom of the cover, and some small tears at the spine, but otherwise, the pressbook and its contents are in pretty nice condition, so we leave it to bidders to decide how important the missing 4 pages are (which do not affect poster pages).
