An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded Australian Daybill Movie Poster (db; measures 13 1/4" x 30" [34 x 76 cm]) (Learn More)

Sword in the Desert, the 1949 George Sherman England Middle-East Palestine Israel War of Independence melodrama ("Their story is written in the burning sands and bullets sing the fame of their deeds!"; about an American freighter captain who smuggles Jewish refugees into Palestine just before the 1948-49 War of Independence; the producers tried to be very even handed and not favor either side, and this is surely one of the very first movies made after the creation of Israel about this subject, because the war ended in March of 1949 and this movie was released in August of 1949) starring Dana Andrews, Marta Toren, Stephen McNally, Jeff Chandler (in his third credited movie role!), Philip Friend, Hugh French, and Liam Redmond. Note that Jeff Chandler was Jewish and had been born Ira Grossel. He never hid his Jewish heritage, and he was very proud to appear in this movie, and it was the only character he ever played who was explicitly Jewish (he played one of the refugees).

If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know.

Condition: good to very good. There is a theater snipe glued across the top of the poster that adds approximately 4" to the overall height of the poster (the poster was not trimmed and the snipe could surely be removed by a professional restorer, or talented amateur, if one chose to do so). There is some creasing throughout the poster.
