An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked French One-Panel "Grande" Movie Poster (1p; measures 46 1/2" x 61 3/4" [118 x 157 cm]) (Learn More) Crime School, the 1938 Lewis Seiler juvenile delinquent reform school crime melodrama ("Where today's kids are turned into tomorrow's killers"; "From a story by Crane Wilbur"; a sequel of sorts to the immensely popular "Dead End"; these movies were so successful that they spawned dozens more sequels and spin-offs) starring Humphrey Bogart, Gale Page, The Dead End Kids (Billy Halop, Bobby Jordan, Leo Gorcey, Gabriel Dell, Huntz Hall, and Bernard Punsley), Charles Trowbridge, Spencer Charters, Donald Briggs, and Cy Kendall (as the warden). Note that this movie was a remake of "The Mayor of Hell", a 1933 James Cagney movie, and it was remade yet again just one year later as "Hell's Kitchen" with Ronald Reagan (apparently the public did not grow tired of this plot in the 1930s!). Also note that this was the second movie with the "Dead End Kids" who had great success in 1937's "Dead End", where they had also co-starred with Humphrey Bogart! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: Dori Important Added Info: Note that ANY first release non-U.S. movie paper from this movie is incredibly rare! We have only previously auctioned two English trade ads and a Yugoslavian poster (from the 1950s first release), but no other first release non-U.S. movie paper, from this movie until we were consigned this French one-panel! Virtually no French posters survive from before, during, or right after World War II. Apparently there were many paper shortages in France during World War II, resulting in the destruction of almost all pre-World War II posters! What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: fair to good. The poster had paper loss at the upper right crossfold entering the girl's chin. It had many scuffs along most of the folds, with a few tiny tears and tiny bits of paper loss. The entire poster had darkened somewhat. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to linenbacking. Someone backed the poster onto linen many years ago, and it acquired unfortunate water staining, both in the poster and in the linen, and it is scattered down the top left of the poster, with some in the middle left. If I owned this incredibly rare poster, I would surely have it removed from the old linen and properly re-backed, but bear all of the above in mind before bidding on it Learn More about condition grades
