Date Sold 7/16/2017Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Pressbook (pb; measures 11 1/2" x 18" [29 x 46 cm]; 8 pages) (Learn More) Shanghai Lady, the 1929 John S. Robertson China romantic melodrama ("100% talking"; "More thrilling than the stage play!"; about an ex-prostitute and drug addict who meets an ex-convict in Shanghai, and both want to change their lives, and each believes the other is a respectable person who would be horrified to learn the truth about the other!) starring Mary Nolan, James Murray, Lydia Yeamans Titus, Wheeler Oakman, and Anders Randolf. Note that star Mary Nolan was a former Ziegfeld girl who was then known as "Bubbles Wilson", but she had a very troubled life, filled with scandal, and she retired from movies in 1932, and was later a drug addict, and died in 1948 at the age of 43, completely forgotten. A similar issue existed with actor James Murray. He won praise from critics for his starring role in King Vidor's The Crowd, which was his first major role. Unfortunately, the pressures of Hollywood got to him and a couple of years after this movie, he became an alcoholic who could not hold down a job. He became homeless, and when he coincidentally ran into King Vidor while begging for change, he refused Vidor's offer of an acting job. His body was discovered in the Hudson river in 1936. He was 35. Note that this is a "lost" film, which means that no surviving copies are thought to exist. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that we have provided an image of the front and back covers of this pressbook (if the back cover is not the poster page, we photographed the interior poster page), and of course, the winner of this auction will receive the entire single pressbook we are auctioning (plus any supplements or heralds described above)! Also note that this pressbook is complete and uncut! Given that theater owners purchased pressbooks partly in order to create their newspaper advertising, and quite frequently cut them up for that purpose, it is rare to find a pressbook that IS complete and uncut! Condition: very good, NO CUTS. The pressbook is complete and uncut and it is folded down the middle. Learn More about condition grades
