Date Sold 8/7/2022Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Special Movie Poster (measures 20 1/2" x 27" [52 x 69 cm]) (Learn More) Gilda, the classic 1946 Charles Vidor Buenos Aires Argentina romantic love triangle bad girl gambling casino crime film noir ("'Johnny, let me go, please let me go. I can't stand it any more...'"; "Now they all know what I am..."; "'I was true to one man once ...and look what happened!'"; "'I didn't think I'd be true to a man again as long as I lived...'"; "'I warned you to let me alone. And I mean it!'"; "There never was a women like Gilda!") starring Rita Hayworth (in the title role "as Gilda"), Glenn Ford, George Macready, Joseph Calleia, Steven Geray, Joe Sawyer, Ludwig Donath, Robert Scott, and Gerald Mohr. Note that the sheath dress that Rita Hayworth wears in the movie (designed by Jean Louis) certainly contributed greatly to the popularity of this movie! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we are not sure exactly how this special poster was used or distributed! From the back of it, it appears that it was distributed folded twice, which would make it 10 1/4" x 13 1/2", and it conceivably might have been some sort of "promo brochure", but it seems odd that it does not have information about the movie printed on the back as a folded promo brochure almost surely would. It may have been some sort of handout on the street. We just don't know, so please don't bid on this extremely rare poster unless you can accept the uncertainties as to its original purpose (but it is surely from when the movie was first released in 1946). We have previously auctioned several examples of a smaller Spanish/U.S. poster that measures 12 3/4" x 16 1/4", but with a different image, and we also don't know how that poster was used or distributed. If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here. Note that this special poster was printed in the United States for use at theaters with Spanish speaking audiences (this was done most by MGM, starting in the 1930s, but it was done by the other major studios as well, and often the posters would have the exact same image as the English language poster, except the writing would be in Spanish, and on posters from the 1930s and 1940s there would be an added "Toda en Espanol!", meaning "Entirely in Spanish!", printed within the image). Sometimes posters from the 1960s or later will have the word "SPANISH" printed in the bottom border (or sometimes stamped on the back of the poster). What IS gelbacking? Learn More Condition: good to very good. The poster had creases, scuffs, and fine surface paper loss on both folds, with some tiny bits of paper loss and creases around the edges, and the right 3/4" had been folded back at one time. There was a take stain in the top right corner and small tears and creases in the other three corners. The poster had some light rippling. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to restoration. A talented restorer gel backed the poster (meaning they backed the poster onto a gel material) and they then performed restoration to the above defects, and then removed the gel backing, so that the poster still exactly looks and feels like an original poster (and it is!), with no backing at all. You can see some signs of the above defects and the restoration of the above defects, but it displays pretty well. Learn More about condition grades
