At some point in the 1950s, after Playboy magazine came out, they tried to emulate Playboy and also include straight news stories (likely so that men could justify buying it to their wives!), but apparently, that fooled nobody and did not increase sales, so they dropped it and went back to what they knew, and as standards relaxed, their pictures and stories got racier and racier, and they added a "SALE TO MINORS FORBIDDEN" to the cover!
