An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Austrian Movie Poster (measures 23 3/4" x 34" [60 x 86 cm]) (Learn More) The Fugitive, the 1947 John Ford Mexican/U.S. south-of-the-border crime melodrama ("Betrayed ...By men of evil for a handful of silver! Befriended ...By a woman, who alone dared shield him from doom!"; "Based on the novel by Graham Greene"; set in Central America, about a priest who is wanted by the authorities who had denounced Christianity) starring Henry Fonda, Dolores Del Rio, Pedro Armendariz, J. Carrol Naish, Leo Carrillo, Ward Bond, Robert Armstrong, and John Qualen. Note that this movie deals with all Central American characters, but director John Ford chose to cast a non-Latino actor, Henry Fonda, in the lead role, thus diminishing the power of the movie. This reluctance on Hollywood's part to use Latino actors in lead roles continued for many years. In 1961, there was a new version of this movie, filmed for television under the title of the source novel, "The Power and the Glory", and once again, an Anglo actor (Laurence Olivier) played the lead role! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: P.F. Important Added Info: Note that this is an extremely rare Austrian poster from soon after World War II, when the Allies occupied the country (and obviously Dolores Del Rio was much more popular than Henry Fonda in Austria at this time, because she received a giant artwork image on the poster!). Immediately after World War II, the U.S. occupied Japan and part of Germany, and many American movies were shown in both countries (and also Austria) between 1945 and the end of the occupation. Most of the Japanese posters we have seen from that period and many of the German programs from the same period have a "Motion Picture Export Association" circular printed logo on the poster or program, and apparently this was a program run in conjunction with the U.S. government. Since there were many U.S. servicemen in Japan and Germany at this time, many of these posters and programs have the title written in both Japanese (or German) and in English, and they are from the first release of that movie in that country.
