Griffith silent romantic Biblical disaster melodrama ("125,000 men and women in the might production"; "7,500 horses in the marvelous race along the Euphrates"; "See the hordes of Cyrus before the mighty wall of fire"; "See the fountains that sparkle with wine"; loosely based on the story of the destruction of Babylonia in 539 B.C. by Persia, adding in a beautiful mountain girl who unsuccessfully tries to stop it when she falls in love with the ruler of Babylonia) starring Tully Marshall, Constance Talmadge ("See Constance Talmadge as The Mountain Girl"), Alfred Paget, Elmo Lincoln, and Elmer Clifton. Note that D.W. Griffith followed up his massive 1915 success, "The Birth of a Nation", with the 1916 "Intolerance", which was a multi-section movie showing intolerance through the ages. It was not nearly as successful as "The Birth of a Nation", so to try to reap more financial rewards out of it, Griffith in 1919, re-edited the portion of this movie that was set in Babylon, and expanded it (using discarded footage and also shooting new footage) into this feature film, re-titled "The Fall of Babylon". He also did the same with the "modern" portion (set in the then "present day" of 1916) of "Intolerance", and it was released as "Mother and the Law". NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography.
