An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Herald (measures 3 1/2" x 5 1/2" [9 x 14 cm]; 4 pages) (Learn More) Bad Sister, the 1931 Hobart Henley romantic family relationship melodrama ("The girl who wanted everything!"; "Based on the story by Booth Tarkington"; about the wild "bad sister" of a family, who gets involved with a con man, played by a young Humphrey Bogart, and after he takes advantage of her, she turns to a kindly doctor; she has a "good" younger sister, played by a young Bette Davis, and the younger sister loves the doctor, but knows he loves her sister; but later, when the bad sister jilts the doctor, love blossoms between the doctor and the good sister) starring Conrad Nagel, Sidney Fox, Bette Davis, Humphrey Bogart (fourth billed, in his fourth movie, one of the roles he had in 1931 to 1934, before he went back to Broadway, because his Hollywood career had seemingly fizzled out), Zasu Pitts, Slim Summerville, Charles Winninger, Bert Roach, Emma Dunn, and David Durand. Few people know of this important early Bette Davis role, which is the first movie that was released with her in it (she had a supporting role in "Way Back Home", which was filmed before this, but was released after it). Davis had had success on Broadway in 1929 and 1930, which caught the attention of Universal, who signed her to a contract. But she didn't make a splash in her Universal films that year, and in 1932, she signed a 7 year contract with Warner Bros., and the rest, as they say, is history! Also note that Bette Davis referred to this movie many times in interviews, because she would be asked what her first movie was, and she would say "Bad Sister", and then pause, and add "...and I played the good sister!". Finally, note that poster material of any kind from this movie is incredibly rare (it wasn't re-released, and we don't know that it was released in any other countries).
