Date Sold 9/5/2021Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. A Group of 4 Autographed Scrapbook Pages (ranging in size from 7 1/4" x 10 1/4" [18 x 26 cm] to 7 3/4" x 11" [20 x 28 cm]) (Learn More) The Hollywood Victory Caravan was a two-week cross-country railroad journey in 1942 that brought together two dozen film stars to raise money for the Army and Navy Relief Society. It was sponsored by the Hollywood Victory Committee of Stage, Screen and Radio. The Caravan show played in 12 cities and netted over $700,000. Special music and lyrics were written for the show by Jerome Kern, Johnny Mercer, Frank Loesser and Arthur Schwartz. The stars included: Desi Arnaz, Joan Bennett, Joan Blondell, Charles Boyer, James Cagney, Claudette Colbert, Jerry Colonna, Bing Crosby, Olivia de Havilland, Cary Grant, Charlotte Greenwood, Bob Hope, Frances Langford, Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy (Oliver and Hardy), Bert Lahr, Groucho Marx, Frank McHugh, Ray Middleton, Merle Oberon, Pat O'Brien, Eleanor Powell, Rise Stevens, Karin Booth, Alma Carroll, Frances Gifford, Elyse Knox, Marie McDonald, Fay McKenzie, Juanita Stark and Arleen Whelan. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that these items are four pages of a scrapbook, three of which have photos on both sides, and have been personally autographed (signed) by THIRTEEN people, who are pictured in those photos, as seen in our images: Stan Laurel, Oliver Hardy, James Cagney, Pat O'Brien, Francis Langford, Claudette Colbert, Bert Lahr, Merle Oberon, Rise Stevens, Joan Bennett, Charlotte Greenwood, Eleanor Powell, AND Ray Middleton! Our consignor purchased these scrapbook pages at a Los Angeles estate auction. He did not receive a certificate of authenticity, but we feel certain that the scrapbook was put together by someone named Stanford, who was on the train with these stars in 1942 (and likely worked for them), and acquired the autographs at that time. Note that the Stan Laurel autograph says "THIS DAM TRAIN, I CAN'T WRITE" under his signature, indicating he was surely signing while the train was moving from one city to another, making it all the more certain it is authentic! Obviously, the new owner of these thirteen autographs will surely want to have them removed from the pages they are glued to (and carefully, because some are back to back). This can be done by a professional restorer or a talented amateur. Once they have been removed, they can of course be sold and displayed individually, and the prize of the collection are the great Laurel and Hardy autographs! As is true of all the signed items we are currently auctioning, we give every buyer 30 days in which to review what they purchased and they can return any item as long as it is within 30 days of the end of the auction. On non-signed items, we give a "lifetime guarantee" on everything we auction, but on signed items, we give the above modified guarantee of 30 days after the auction closes. Condition: good. Three of the scrapbook pages have the autographed pictures glued to the fronts and backs of them, and they have some light staining and rippling from the glue that was used to attach them. The fourth page is glued to what was the back cover of the scrapbook. As is noted above, a professional or talented amateur can surely remove all of these, after which they can be sold or displayed individually, but bear all of the above in mind before bidding on these really cool signed pages!
