An Original Vintage German Exhibition Postcard (measures 4 1/4" x 6" [11 x 15 cm]) (Learn More) Der Ewige Jude (literally translates to "The Eternal Jew") was the title of an exhibition of antisemitism displayed at the Library of the German Museum in Munich from November 8, 1937 to January 31, 1938 (after that, it moved first to Vienna and then Berlin, over the following year until early 1939). The exhibition was sponsored by Joseph Goebbels, the Nazi minister of propaganda, and who held well-known extreme anti-Semitic opinions. The actual displays, with photographs and caricatures, focused on antisemitic stereotypes in presenting the Jewish attempts at "Bolshevising" Nazi Germany. It was best exemplified in the exhibition poster which featured a Jewish man with coins in one hand, a whip in the other and holding the Soviet Union under his arm. The year after this exhibition closed, a German movie of the same name was made, also sponsored by Goebbels, and it is often cited as one of the most offensive Nazi movies ever made, and it is banned and almost never shown, except in very supervised circumstances. Finally, note that just before this exhibition, there was a different exhibition in Germany called "Entartete Kunst" (Degenerate Art), which exhibited 650 works confiscated from German museums (and that exhibition ended shortly after this one began). Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this German postcard (which is promoting the Munich exhibition). The postcard has the same exact art that was used on posters advertising the exhibition, and those posters are beyond rare (we are told that many years ago, an example of that poster sold for $30,000, and we would certainly think it might sell for far more today!), and likely the only surviving ones are found in museums. Also note that the postcard has an artist's signature on it, but we cannot read it, and we could not find any museum collection that could identify it. If anyone knows the name of this artist, please e-mail us and we will post it here. Note that we are also auctioning (in a separate auction) a museum exhibition guide from Degenerate Art, the exhibition that ran prior to this one. Condition: very good. Someone wrote "$100-" on the back of the bottom of the card. It has faint smudges on the back, but otherwise, it is in nice condition! Learn More about condition grades
