An Original Vintage Theatrical Paperbacked Style A Half-Sheet Movie Poster (measures 22" x 28") (Learn More) The Buccaneer, the 1938 Cecil B. DeMille seafaring Navy Naval sailor military biographical pirate romantic adventure melodrama ("Based on an adaptation by Jeanie Macpherson of 'Lafitte the Pirate' by Lyle Saxon"; a highly fictionalized biography of the famous 18th century pirate Jean Lafitte, who operated for many years off of New Orleans, but because he did not attack any American ships, he was somewhat tolerated by the American government) starring Fredric March (as Jean Lafitte), Franciska Gaal, Akim Tamiroff, Margot Grahame, Walter Brennan, Ian Keith, Anthony Quinn, Douglass Dumbrille, Beulah Bondi, Robert Barrat, and Evelyn Keyes (making her debut in a tiny role). Note that all of the U.S. posters for this movie that have art have really distinctive art. All of it is by an artist named "Dan Sayre Groesbeck". But several of the posters are unsigned, and others are signed with only parts of his name, and in different ways (perhaps the artist was just being "playful"). Groesbeck worked for DeMille creating his concept art and some of his poster art from the early 1920s until he passed away in 1950! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Condition: fine. This poster was paperbacked and during the backing process, its extremely minor defects were repaired and it now looks really great! We only assigned this grade ("fine") to posters that were in really excellent condition prior to paperbacking, AND which were paperbacked by a top professional! The poster had many rough creases across both foldlines. There were creases, tears, smudges, pinholes, and small paper loss around the edges of the poster. The person who did the restoration put new blank white paper over all the borders to even out the appearance (but the small writing at the bottom of the poster was not covered over). This is a common technique used by several top restorers. It is done so well that the majority of collectors are not even aware it has been done, and many do not feel it to be a significant detraction (since it is only blank white area). Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to paperbacking. The poster was fairly well backed, but you can still see signs of the restoration on both foldlines, even from a distance, and if I owned the poster, I would have additional restoration performed on those areas, hopefully without re-backing the poster.
