Auction History Result #675 UNDER YOUR SPELL 2 LCs '36 Tibbett Date Sold 11/13/2001Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. 2 Original Vintage Theatrical Photolobbies (Measures 11" x 14") (Learn More) Under Your Spell, the 1936 Otto Preminger romantic musical (about a famous singer who wants to quit the business, and he goes to a ranch in Mexico, but he meets a rich woman who loves celebrities, and they ultimately fall in love) starring Lawrence Tibbett, Wendy Barrie, Gregory Ratoff, Arthur Treacherd, and Gregory Gaye. Note that Lawrence Tibbett was a singer during the 1930s (but best remembered from the Metropolitan Opera), who appeared in several movies as, naturally, an opera singer. He was the first to play the leading role in many famous operas, including the role of Brutus Jones, in The Emperor Jones (which he played in blackface)! Darryl F. Zanuck signed him to a multi-picture contract, sure he would be a major star, but alas, he was not, and he only appeared in a few movies. Later, he had throat problems, which led to a drinking problem (or perhaps vice versa), and his later years were unhappy. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that 20th Century Fox was the only production company to make a set of eight photolobbies in addition to a set of eight regular lobby cards in the late '30s and early '40s. This is the only case where I have seen one of these photolobby sets have a title card! Condition: very good. Both lobbies have minor creases and a few 1/2" tears in the blank borders.
