A Paperbacked German Advertising Poster (measures 20" x 24 1/2" [51 x 62 cm]) (Learn More) Pelikan Tuschen (literally translates to "Pelican Ink"), the circa 1909 German Sachplakat advertising poster promoting the purchase of ink, and featuring award-winning Walter Furst artwork. Pelikan was founded in 1838 and originally produced paints and inks. Today, they are Germany's leading company for office supplies and stationery. This poster from a 1909 poster competition shows 4 stylized inkwells, the caps of which are reminiscent of those of fairy tale dwarfs. The poster competition of 1909 had the effect that numerous advertising posters left the aesthetics of Art Nouveau behind and that the focus was solely on the product and its name. Flat and striking product presentations of high artistic value dominate. Note that the term Sachplakat, or Object Poster, was coined in Germany around 1905 to describe a new type of poster which featured a realistic depiction of the product and little else. Often laced with humor and of stunning visual impact, these posters represent the last great period of the lithographic poster, which high cost and long production cycles was soon to eliminate. Artist: Walter Furst Important Added Info: Note that this poster has been paperbacked. What is paperbacking? This means the poster was backed onto a light paper backing (acid-free), that is similar in feel to that of the original poster (it means that the poster must be handled carefully, as the backing does not give it much added strength, but it is similar to having an unrestored poster, and yet it has been properly preserved). It is a similar process to linenbacking, except that most collectors use linenbacking for one-sheets and paperbacking for half-sheets, inserts, window cards. Also note that because this poster was paperbacked onto a thinner paper backing, it COULD be sent rolled, but we would MUCH prefer to send it in a large flat package (because we fear that rolling it, even into a wide tube, would have an excellent change of damaging it, so we will only send it in a tube if the buyer insists, and then they would be responsible for any damage), but otherwise, we will ship it in a very large flat package, so bear that expense in mind before bidding on this poster. What IS paperbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. Prior to paperbacking, the poster was never folded. It had a small stain at top center and a stain in the top right background. It had tiny stains in the lower right blank border. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to paperbacking. The restorer backed the poster "in the European style", meaning that they did not do restoration to the defects described above. Learn More about condition grades
