An Original Vintage Promotional Hardcover Book (measures 12" x 15 3/4" [30 x 40 cm]; 32 pages) (Learn More) RCA Victor High Fidelity Photophone, the hardcover book created by RCA in 1929 to promote their technology for synchronizing sound to film, which was incredibly important when all studios were rushing to convert to sound movies (and all theaters had to buy equipment that could play those movies). The first technology was the Warner Bros. Vitaphone sound-on-disc system that was used in "The Jazz Singer" in 1927, and soon there were three other major technologies: this from RCA, the Phonofilm from Lee De Forest, and Movietone from Fox-Case. When FBO merged with Radio Pictures in 1929 and became RCA, they made Photophone the primary sound system for all their movies ("Syncopation" in 1929 was the first movie made in RCA Photophone). This is really a cool book! It has a cover that is not the same size as the back cover, and the inside front cover is silver foil. There are a total of 32 pages, all describing how wonderful this technology is. One page has an image printed on it, and there is a transparent pink celluloid piece bound in that overlays the image so you can see what movies are like with and without "high fidelity full toned, rich, utterly realistic sound". Most interesting of all is a fold-out "pressbook", which offers pennants, banners, and even a full-color one-sheet that theaters that used the new Photophone process could order, so that they could display them in their theaters, and customers would know that they had this new superior sound process (the one-sheet is printed in full-color and under it, it says that there were "three to a set" and that they were "done in ten colors"). We can't imagine that many of these books have survived! Condition: good to very good. There are stains on the front and back covers, and on the right edge of the title page, that was exposed due to the different size of the covers. There is slight staining on the right edge of the last interior page, for the same reason. The rest of the pages are in pretty nice condition (see our images). Learn More about condition grades
