An Original Vintage Theatrical 8" x 10" Movie Still (Learn More) Mister Wu, the 1927 William Nigh silent China family relationship romantic melodrama ("From the play by Henry Maurice Vernon and Harold Owen..."; "Adaptation and continuity by Lorna Moon"; with Lon Chaney playing a dual role, as the Mandarin Mister Wu and his aged grandfather; in the movie, Mr. Wu's daughter falls in love with a Westerner, with predictable results) starring Lon Chaney Sr. (in the title role), Renee Adoree, Louise Dresser, Holmes Herbert, Ralph Forbes, and Anna May Wong. Note that Anna May Wong would have been perfect for the female lead in this movie (playing Chaney's granddaughter), but because that character had a love scene with a "white" man, MGM cast white Renee Adoree in the role (and she wore "yellowface" makeup to portray an Asian woman), so that audiences wouldn't have to see an interracial romance. Thankfully, the prejudices of that time no longer exist! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that the still shows a great portrait of Lon Chaney and the six Asian females who play his daughters in the movie (note that the still identifies them as having been "recruited from the Los Angeles Chinatown", and "are nearly all the daughters of wealthy merchants"! Also note that a paper snipe was glued to the back of the still, and then folded over to the front. This was done rather than gluing the snipe to the back, so that the snipe could be unfolded and the still could be displayed with the snipe unfolded, which would let moviegoers read the information on the snipe in the lobby (and of course, the snipe would be folded backwards, so it would not show). This was done with many stills of the 1930s, but often, the snipes are either partially or completely lost, because it is easier for them to be torn off. UNLESS OTHERWISE NOTED, THE SNIPE DOES NOT HAVE ANY EFFECT ON THE FRONT OF THE STILL! Condition: very good to fine. There are a very few faint emulsion scuffs scattered around the edges of the still, but they are truthfully not at all noticeable except when the still is tilted to the light.
