Date Sold 6/24/2018Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical 8" x 10 1/4" [20 x 26 cm] Movie Still (Learn More) Tell it to the Marines, the 1926 George W. Hill silent United States Marine Corps (USMC) military war romantic love triangle adventure comedy melodrama ("Made with the co-operation and endorsement of the U.S. Marine Corps"; about a tough Marine Sergeant who helps turn a spoiled young man into a "man", while both of them pursue a beautiful Navy nurse) starring Lon Chaney Sr., William Haines, Warner Oland, Eleanor Boardman, Eddie Gribbon, and Carmel Myers. Note that the technical adviser was Marine Corps Gen. Smedley Butler, and he and star Lon Chaney became great friends, and that lasted after the movie until Chaney's unfortunate death in 1930 (the director on this film, George W. Hill, and his co-star William Haines were both pallbearers at his funeral). Urban legend has it that the great success of this movie caused enlistments into the Marines to rise drastically, and the plot of this movie was "borrowed" for several World War II movies! Important Added Info: Note that this still, which measures 8" x 10 1/4" [20 x 26 cm], is from the first release of the movie, and it has an "OCT 24 1926" date stamp on the back. It also has several later date stamps from when it was later used, and also a clipping from a 1936 newspaper, when it was used yet again. Condition: fair to good. The still was used in a newspaper multiple times. There is solid black paint applied to the background around Chaney's figure and there are printed marks around his head, showing the part to be used in the newspaper, and also printer instructions in the top and bottom borders. In spite of the above, the still would look nice on the new owner's wall, but please see our super-sized images to get a good sense of the condition of this still. Learn More about condition grades
