Date Sold 12/19/2023Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Unfolded Special Poster (measures 40" x 60" [102 x 152 cm]) (Learn More) George Foreman VS. Muhammad Ali, the 1974 sport boxing event ("Exclusive theatre telecast"; "The greatest heavyweight championship battle of all time"; "Live from Africa on Big Screen Closed Circuit TV"; "World Heavyweight Championship"; "Direct from Kinshasa, Zaire - Tuesday, September 24"; "15 rounds"; "No home TV or radio broadcast") promoting a fight between George Foreman ("World Heavyweight Champion") and Muhammad Ali ("Former World Heavyweight Champion"). The fight was originally to take place on September 24th but was moved to October 30th. This is the legendary fight where Ali used his "rope-a-dope" to win back the Championship from the much younger Foreman. It has been called "arguably the greatest sporting event of the 20th century". NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we have previously auctioned two different posters from this event, which measure 23" x 34" and 39" x 47" (that poster had the September 24th date), but we have never auctioned THIS 40" x 60" poster! This poster and the 23" x 34" poster have the October 29th date (it was shown in the U.S. on October 30, because of the time difference between Africa and the U.S.!). Condition: fair. The poster was created on a thick brown cardboard and someone had restoration performed to it without backing the poster (they used glue and tape on the back of tears in the top and bottom borders, with one long tear that started in the left of the top border and went down through the top tagline and through the yellow area by Foreman. It seems likely the poster displayed pretty good at that time. Unfortunately, after that, someone mishandled it badly, or it was damaged in the mail, and it acquired many creases throughout, several of which caused the cardboard to crack. If I owned this really cool poster, I would surely have a restorer back it and perform top restoration, but bear its current condition in mind and the cost of the restoration in mind before bidding on it.
